Above and Beyond in ESA

VICKI VELA

Vicki Vela, President of Alpha Sigma chapter, has gone “above and beyond” with a smile on her face! Because of her tireless efforts our New Mexico THANKS AND GIVING "One Step at a Time" walk was a success even though our little Hobbs Broadmoor Mall only had 13 stores we ended with $2244 for St. Jude and she was the biggest factor for our success; I believe Christina Baugh and April Austen will concur.

Vicki (Iris) Vela took on the challenge of implementing the new ALSAC fund-raising idea of “One Step at a Time” even after she had presented her year's calendar and had it accepted by her Hobbs chapter of ESA (Alpha Sigma). In so doing, she got a brand new pledge and incorporated the Teen Court volunteers under David Garcia to help print out the flyers, hand them out and 12 even showed up to walk that morning of the event. The Hobbs Mall is small (only 13 stores) and had undergone a trying year after their Furrs cafeteria burned so this walk was embraced as a new beginning for the mall to have more events.

Vicki has 2 jobs and is a registered nurse who loves ESA because it and the Hobbs members saw her through a painful divorce and many other challenges. She said when taking on the chapter presidency that she could and would do anything but sit and do nothing. Wow! How fantastic is that to have a real “shaker and mover and doer”! She urged her chapter to take on this project even though they had already done two mathathons and are now scheduled to have a Grateful Grandparent event in March! She is just awesome! Vicki is always, always positive and a sweetheart to work with. She never fails to find the bright spot behind any difficult situation! She is also her chapter's nominee for New Mexico NMSC Outstanding Woman!
