We're forming a collegiate alumni network - Plans are developing quickly for fun alumni chapters comprised of former collegiate members. If you're interested in how to become involved in your state, please contact Tracy Swanson at tracyswanson@esaintl.com or 970.223.2824.

Are you thinking about Team ESA in December 2008? Since ALSAC/St. Jude has room blocks (with special prices) for the marathon weekend, hotels do not allow additional room blocks for other marathon related groups, such as Team ESA. Below is information on the four main hotels we have used in the past. All are in close proximity to the events. It is up to you to book your room... don't wait too long as the rooms will fill up fast and you don't want to miss out! If you have any questions, contact Jodi Lang jodi@scc.com

Executive Director, B.J. Clark, bjclark@esaintl.com - This month, Epsilon Sigma Alpha will hold its Annual Leadership Training Seminar in Denver, CO. We'll be sharing ideas, programs, and project information with state presidents, state officers, and other interested members. As a result, I encourage all of you to check with your state representatives to learn what's new for you and the officers you will elect this spring.

Leadership training and personal development are key benefits of ESA membership. I hope that each of you will choose to learn more about what was presented at the Annual Leadership Training Seminar to learn how the information presented can assist you and your chapter in developing these essential skills.

Also remember that www.esaintl.com > Member Center > Resources provides an enormous amount of information for you to develop your own skills and to encourage others to develop theirs. As you wait to hear about what was presented in Denver, take a look at the web site and begin to make leadership development a priority for this year.

IC President, Rhea Weaver, rweaver@consolidated.net - On February 6, the International Council Executive Board will travel to Denver to hold our mid-year meeting. Each board member will have an opportunity to report on what they have accomplished and plans they have made for the remainder of the year. We will have decisions to make and motions to vote on. If you have something you would like discussed, please let me or one of the board members know. We are here to serve the membership. We also look forward to welcoming our current officers and prospective leaders to the Annual Leadership Training Seminar beginning on February 7. If you know someone attending, be sure and ask them about it.

February 29 is Leap Day! Leap years come about due to a technicality in the number of days in a year. A year consists of approximately 365 days and 6 hours. Therefore, every four years, an extra day is added to account for the extra 24 hours that have accumulated. What are you going to do with your extra day this month? A Leap Year social sounds like a good idea! I bet you could even have frog nametags. What ideas do you have for this special day?

IC Workshop Coordinator, Glen Gay, ggay123@cox.net - Just Imagine! That's right - imagine what you can learn at the 61st International Council Convention in Chattanooga, TN. "Imagine the Possibilities," Wednesday with the computer workshop. Thursday we will be exploring the "Hidden Talents in ESA." The hands on workshop will let your imagination run wild with all the creative things you can do! Friday, imagine being a great chef and learning the trade secrets to making a great dish. There will be something fun for everyone. Make your travel plans today to attend the 61st IC Convention in Chattanooga, TN, as "Down Home in Tennessee" is the place to be July 7 - 12, 2008!

To find a registration form and more detailed information on IC Convention go to www.easintl.com > Intl Council > 2008 Convention.

IC Sr. Past President/Care Connection Coordinator, Judi King, JudiK90605@aol.com - Accidents? Bad Weather? Need help with an issue like adoption or caring for elderly parents? Need a person to talk to?

A very caring group of Epsilon Sigma Alpha members are ready, willing, and able to help you. The state Care Connection coordinators and the Care Connection contacts are located on our website at www.esaintl.com > Intl Council > Good Works > Care Connection. All of us know that what distinguishes ESA from other organizations is our warm and loving connection to each other. We rediscovered the need for a way to contact each other during the national tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. But it doesn't have to be a national tragedy. Our daily lives bring us challenges. So don't hesitate to contact a member on either of these lists.

Thought for the Day: "A friend is someone who comes in when the world has gone out."

Collegiate conference scheduled - In celebration of 20 years of collegiate chapters within Epsilon Sigma Alpha, our first-ever multi-state collegiate conference will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Illinois State University in Bloomington, IL. We're planning sessions on personal skills development, interview techniques, résumé development, and creating your best self. Collegiate members interested in attending, please contact Tracy Swanson at tracyswanson@esaintl.com or 970.223.2824.

Share the ESA experience - At the beginning of each new year, many people make resolutions... some want to lose weight... some want to get organized... some want to make more time for the things they enjoy. As members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, we enjoy working together to make the world a better place for those less fortunate. Through the common bond of ESA, we make friends from all over the country and abroad. We enjoy attending chapter, state, and regional meetings to renew old friendships and make new friends. Today, we need to refocus our efforts and strive to enlarge our circle of friends and effect positive change in our world. Share the ESA experience today by asking someone to join or by starting a new chapter in your community. You'll be glad you did!

Spring recruitment tools - A brand-new chapter kit and recruiting flier are available just in time for your spring recruiting event. Order yours today from Epsilon Sigma Alpha Headquarters at esainfo@esaintl.com or 970.223.2824.

Random Acts of Friendship - Each month, we'll randomly draw and share the story of an Epsilon Sigma Alpha member who has sponsored a new member. Leona Corn of Delta Chi Chapter of Moab, UT, sponsored her daughter, Stormy Corn. Leona has been a member for years. Stormy was able to see what Leona did within ESA - rather than Leona simply telling her. "Stormy wanted to belong. From an early age, she knew she would join ESA," recalls Leona. Leona will receive a gift card from Target. Congratulations, Leona!

IC Circle of Life - Jr. Coordinator, Jodi Lang, jodi@scc.com - Can you believe that 2008 is underway? Are you working on your resolutions? Are you putting your fundraising plans into action? When you are planning activities, utilize St. Jude Children's Research Hospital stories and marketing materials to help create interest; work with your Epsilon Sigma Alpha sisters, ALSAC, and the community to develop participation and affiliation; and encourage each other's ideas!

Don't forget about the Grateful Grandparent program, a letter writing campaign asking for donations to St. Jude in honor of grandparents and grandchildren. This letter writing can take place at a State meeting or social. At the Chapter level, you can work with the local Boy and Girl Scout troops, or hold a letter writing church social. There are so many ways to get others involved. Remember that the monies we raise don't have to come from our own pockets. Find a way to involve the kids and the community. Just ask your Circle of Life representative if you need more information. And while you are working on this, how about having a quilt auction just to spice things up a bit? You can auction off a quilt at any event you are having. St. Jude has lots of quilts that we can have.

Now get out there, jump in with both feet, and make the magic happen.

State Presidents Chairman, Verneene Forssberg, vernf66@sbcglobal.net - Every leader must be capable of making good decisions and making them in the proper time frame to make the best impact. Decision-making does not happen in a vacuum - it is a process of preparation and planning. As a leader, one of the most difficult tasks is making tough decisions. Making tough decisions takes courage. Decision-making follows three pathways:

  • Preparing for the decision: A good leader must recognize and frame the issue so that the membership will understand.
  • Making the decisions: Good leaders do not endlessly weigh options - they know there is a time to make the call and move on. This helps the membership make a firm commitment to the decision.
  • Executing the decision: After making a decision, a leader must make sure the decision is implemented correctly. Leaders should make adjustments as new information becomes available.
