Check out the collegiate web site - Epsilon Sigma Alpha Headquarters has launched a new web site for collegiate chapters based on the requests and comments received at the recent ESA Collegiate leadership conference. Student members came together from several states to learn more about themselves, chart their best futures, and make ESA a part of their fun and personal support system throughout their lives. Student members brainstormed ideas for collegiate and alumni chapters and carried these ideas to the web. Collegiate members can now swap ideas, keep updated on ESA happenings, share their photos, and do greater things through enhanced connection with other ESA collegiate chapters. The site is a work in progress, so let us know what you think. Check it out at www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org.

Executive Director, B.J. Clark, bjclark@esaintl.com - Spring is an important time filled with state conventions, Founders' Day celebrations, and installations of newly elected chapter officers. As a result, I'd like to remind you to go over the chapter roster mailing that you (or your chapter treasurer) received to make official officer changes along with updated e-mail and home addresses. By taking a few minutes during this busy time of year, you can help us to maintain good communications throughout Epsilon Sigma Alpha.

Since there are many terrific new things coming your way this spring in ESA, you'll want to read all of the materials included in your chapter's spring roster along with all of the materials that are included in this newsletter. Also, take a minute to share your good works with ESA Headquarters. Perhaps next time, you'll see your ideas in newsletters like this one, on the web site, or in the Jonquil.

Let's take the time to maintain our strong bonds of friendship through updating our communications and through sharing the story of ESA with others who will want to join us when they learn more about our wonderful organization!

Thanks to all of you. Enjoy a spring filled with the joy and renewal of our ESA spirit.

IC President, Rhea Weaver, rweaver@consolidated.net - Good Day! When you receive this issue, I will be visiting members in Australia. With our improved communications technology, our Australian members are not far away and I plan to share all of our latest developments with them. In April, members of Alpha Rho Chapter of Mackay, Queensland, were featured on the International Council web site "Idea of the Month." E-mail has become the biggest communication tool we have with our ESA members "down under!"

IC Representatives will bring the IC message to 25 state conventions (and Australia) during the month of May. To say we have a busy month is an understatement. Your IC representative will tell you about the "secret"... so be sure to ask. Please don't hesitate to ask questions... that is why the representatives attend convention. Best wishes to all for the best conventions you can IMAGINE!

Send in your registration form for IC Convention in Chattanooga, TN, now! Everything you need to know about 2008 IC Convention is at your fingertips on the website at www.esaintl.com > Intl Council > 2008 Convention.

IC Easter Seals Chair, Pat Stuper, pats@pmmcpas.com -At our First General Assembly of International Council Convention, Thursday, July 10, we will be presenting $5 Wal-Mart gift cards to Easter Seals Tennessee. Rita Baumgartner, vice president of development in Tennessee, will accept our donations. Service recipients in Tennessee receive stipends as their sole support to provide for "needs." Easter Seals supports thousands of people with disabilities across the state for such items as personal care items, bed linens, socks, billfolds, candy, books, crafts, games, and many other items. Simple small things that each of us take for granted would be an incredible gift to someone whose sole support is a state stipend to provide only "needs."

I am inviting you all to come to IC Convention with $5 Wal-Mart Gift Cards to share with Easter Seals Tennessee. There is no limit as to how many you can bring but remember they have to be for $5. There will be a spot below the stage for all of us to deposit our gift cards. Let's fill that bowl to overflowing! Please pass this information on to all your members.

Philanthropic Projects Chair, Vickie Farris, hairdresser@cableone.net - Use the 48.5 cents per mile on your International Council Philanthropic Report Forms. The mileage was set at the beginning of the year by the IC Philanthropic Projects Chair and the IC President following the IRS mileage guidelines at that time. You are to use the 48.5 cents per mile, despite the IRS web site now saying 50.5.

Please remember that only Epsilon Sigma Alpha members doing projects in the name of ESA can count their hours. If there are any questions, please go to www.esaintl.com > Intl Council > Forms.

Membership Director, Tracy Swanson, tracyswanson@esaintl.com - We have just returned from Leadership in Colorado and are very excited about all that we discussed and learned. There is a challenge to every state, to form at least one new chapter between now and May 31, 2008. Just imagine what would happen if we got that many new chapters!

Collegiate Leadership Conference/Global Alumni Network Update – The multi-state collegiate conference held at Illinois State University on March 29 was amazing! In addition to celebrating 20 years of collegiate Epsilon Sigma Alpha, our collegians brainstormed how to improve communications among themselves and how we can create a way for them to take their ESA membership and support system with them no matter where their lives take them.

We are collecting information from our current and former graduates for a database of alumni who will be able to stay active in ESA as individual members or members of chapters. Their response to this opportunity was heartwarming and we are looking to announce the formation of some alumni chapters as well as collegians joining existing traditional chapters after they wrap up their graduation festivities!

Check it out... the new collegiate ESA web site at www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org. We look forward to adding some of the things on this new site to our existing site in the not-too-distant future.

Random Acts of Friendship - Each month, we'll randomly draw and share the story of an Epsilon Sigma Alpha member who has sponsored a new member.

Laura Teitcsh of Delta Chi Chapter of Davenport, IA, sponsored her close friend, Debbie Fuller. Laura and Debbie met about 17 years ago while Debbie was doing nails at a local salon. The two became fast friends and have offered each other support during very difficult times. Laura describes that she has never had a biological sister, but "Deb is the closest I have to one." Laura will receive a gift card from Target. Congratulations, Laura!

IC Circle of Life - Jr. Coordinator, Jodi Lang, jodi@scc.com - I think springtime has finally sprung, yahoo to that! The Annual Circle of Life training seminar training was incredible. What a great group of enthusiastic, creative leaders ready to work and get things done. The state Circle of Life Coordinators are very motivated to share new programs, and twists on current programs, and new ideas.

Please give the state Circle of Life Coordinators your attention and join in with your support and participation. We should all work together to make the magic happen for the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Have you made your travel plans to Walk the Line? It's time to kick your heels up and reward yourself for a terrific year of fund-raising. It will be an unforgettable evening of fun and celebration. If you are attending International Council Convention, please make sure you have registered for this event. $200 qualifies you for the event and gets you a very fashionable T-shirt; $500 gets you an additional rhinestone pin; $1,000 gets you all of the previous plus a leather picture frame. Even more importantly, you receive the gifts of giving to the kids and having fun with other ESA members. Don't forget you can apply monies raised for the 2007 Memphis Marathon Weekend. The IC Challenge registration form can be found at www.esaintl.com > Circle of Life > IC Challenge.

State Presidents Chair, Verneene Forssberg, vernf66@sbcglobal.net - Always on the search for new leadership materials, I ran across another excellent book entitled, "Leadership Gold" by John C. Maxwell. Maxwell emphasizes it is essential to identify potential leaders and to place them in the right positions. The incoming presidents for 2008-09 are currently in the process of assessing the right person for the position in order to form a perfect state council for the coming year.

When looking for leaders, Maxwell says good leaders will display the following characteristics:

  • Adaptability – Quickly adjusts to change
  • Discernment – Understands the real issues
  • Perspective – Sees beyond their own vantage point
  • Communication – Links to all levels of the organization
  • Servant hood – Does whatever it takes
  • Resourcefulness – Finds creative ways to make things happen
  • Maturity – Puts the Team before self
  • Endurance – Remains consistent in character and competence over the long haul
  • Accountability – Can be counted on when it counts

If you see people that have these qualities, you are most likely looking at people with great leadership potential.
